Functional Skills
Functional Skills sessions focus on developing learners practical literacy and numeracy skills for use in everyday life. Sessions enable learners to take part in a variety of hands-on activities in order to apply their skills and develop their confidence in using them.
In numeracy, example topics range from use of positional language, size order and colour recognition through to counting skills, money management and data handling.
In literacy, learners are given the opportunity to develop their reading skills from symbol, letter and CVC word recognition through to comprehension skills and interpreting different types of texts. Sessions enable learners to develop their individual writing skills from mark-making and letter formation, through to sentence structure and writing for a particular audience. Sessions actively encourage learners to further their communication skills including choice-making, listening to others and responding appropriately.
Functional Skills sessions can be undertaken on a non-accredited basis with the opportunity to register for Open Awards qualifications at Entry Level 1 and above.
